Introduction to Domain Names

If you are on the Internet, domain names play a huge role in your day to day life whether you realize it or not. Domain names represent the address of all of our favorite content online. So what exactly is a domain and how can you use them? Well, that’s up to you.

With over 500 different domain extensions to choose from, it can seem a bit overwhelming. You know your perfect domain name is out there, but you don’t want to risk selecting the wrong one. While it might seem like an intimidating task to find the perfect name, we are here to help.

The Classic Domains

There are two types of classic domain names in the market: Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) and country code top-level domains (ccTLDs)

Generic TLDs are those that are the most versatile and can be used for anything. They are some of the most common names you’ll encounter online. Examples of some Generic TLDs are .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, but there are many more to choose from!

The Country Code Domains

Country Code TLDs exist for almost every nation in the world and are typically used for purposes related to that country. Originally created to serve as the official online home of the countries, in recent times the popularity and versatility of the extensions themselves have resulted in the use of the domain outside of the particular country’s borders.

You’ve no doubt encountered some of the more popular Country Code Domains like .DE (Germany), .EU (European Union), .UK (United Kingdom) and .US (United States).

As mentioned, some Country Code Domains are very versatile and can be applicable to more than just countries. A .IO domain, for example, could represent the British Indian Ocean Territory on one site while covering an American startup on another. Another popular country code domain, .TV, could represent the small Pacific island of Tuvalu on one website and a popular British sitcom on another.
